Why do I need travel insurance for international trips?
Travel insurance can help give you peace of mind as you embark on the adventure of a lifetime (or some much-needed rest and relaxation). While it can’t stop accidents or bad luck from happening, it could make sure the bumps in your trip aren’t too extreme. Whether it’s dealing with some last-minute cancellations or your bags getting stolen, a lot can go wrong when you’re travelling overseas. Throw in potentially expensive healthcare costs, and you get an idea of just how quickly your holiday plans can be derailed. That’s where travel insurance can help smooth things over. Plus, in some countries, travel insurance is a requirement to get in through the airport gates.
What type of travel insurance do I need for international trips?
There’s a whole range of travel insurance policies out there, so why pay for the stuff you won’t use? It’s like paying for a pizza with anchovies when all you wanted was a simple margherita. Your travel insurance policy should match your trip, not just tick a box off your pre-flight list. If you’ve planned an adrenaline-filled adventure, a comprehensive plan with extra activity cover might be the way to go. If you’re a backpacker on a tight budget, a medical-only policy could do the trick. No matter your travel plans, you’ll be able to find a policy that fits like your comfy airport fit.
Helpful tip

You can’t travel without your passport and important documents, but you won’t always want to carry them with you everywhere either. If you’d rather not risk losing your passport while out and about, it’s a smart idea to bring a photocopy instead. Leave the real deal locked up safely at your hotel and take the copy when you’re out exploring. Because nothing ruins a trip faster than realising a pickpocket just swiped your only ticket home.

How much does travel insurance cost for international trips?
How much your travel insurance will cost really depends on where you’re going (as well as your age, trip length, pre-existing conditions, excess, and optional add-ons). All of these things will play differently into your final insurance premium price, so it’s kind of hard to pin down a single figure.
But if you’re looking for a ballpark number to throw into your travel budget Excel sheet, here are a few average comprehensive and basic policy costs for a week-long holiday to some of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations in 2023-24.

When should I buy travel insurance for international trips?
Our handy travel insurance timeline can help explain why taking out travel insurance sooner rather than later could help you avoid headaches down the track.
Planning your trip
When you’re deciding where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do, is also a good time to think about what travel insurance you might need.
Buying your flights
Purchasing your travel insurance when you buy your flight tickets can mean you’re covered if your trip is cancelled before it starts.
Before you fly
If you need to make changes to your policy, like adding an adventure package or extending your coverage, doing so before you take off could mean less stress for you.
On your trip
Hopefully, you won’t need to use it, but if something does go wrong on your trip, your travel insurance could save the day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I purchase travel insurance if I’m already overseas?
If you’re already overseas and find yourself without cover, it’s possible to buy a policy while you’re already on the go.
But your travel insurance options could be limited, and you might need to meet certain eligibility requirements. For example, you may need to buy it sooner rather than later, whether that’s within a few days of getting on the plane or when your other policy ran out. If you do get travel insurance when you’re already overseas, it could have a pre-set excess amount or a no-cover period, meaning you could have to wait for it to kick in.
At the end of the day, sorting out your travel insurance before you take off overseas is easier. Plus, you won’t have to worry about racking up data roaming fees trying to find an insurer.
How does international travel insurance work if I’m travelling to multiple countries?
Australia’s far enough away from a lot of countries that it makes perfect sense to try and squeeze in as many as you can in a single trip. Thankfully, travel insurers get this.
Some policies offer coverage for certain regions rather than specific countries. For instance, you could pick a European policy and have cover for France, Italy, Norway and more, all in one convenient package. Which countries fall into what regions can vary between insurers, so it’s a good idea to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to see if you need to look for additional cover.
Even if you’re just transiting through a country, it could be well worth your while to have it included on your policy (especially if something goes wrong mid-transit from one border to another).
Which countries can it be hard to find travel insurance for?
As a rule of thumb, anywhere marked as a ‘Do not travel’ by Smartraveller is unlikely to be fully covered or even at all.1Smartraveller – Travel advice explained Travelling to these places could mean your health and safety are at extremely high risk, and high risk isn’t something insurers ever like to hear about. While destinations marked as ‘Reconsider your travel’ will often be limited.
As of July 2025, parts of the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas fall into these ‘reconsider travel’ or ‘do not travel’ categories. So before you book, it’s worth checking the Smartraveller website to see if your destination is in the clear.
Are adventurous activities like skydiving or scuba diving covered?
Some people’s idea of a holiday is days on the beach with a good book or two. For others, there needs to be a little more action involved. If adrenaline-filled adventure sounds more your speed, you could still be covered by travel insurance. You might just need to purchase extra cover, like a winter sports policy, or get used to reading the PDS like a best-selling novel.
As you’re going through the PDS, check the definition of any adventure activities listed. While it may be a tedious task, different insurers define activities differently. So you might find you’re covered for rock climbing, but free climbing could be off the cards. You’ll also need to let your insurer know what activities you’ll be doing. They aren’t your parents, but they still need to know what you’re planning on getting up to.
Of course, there are conditions to think about, too. If you ignore or break these conditions, like not wearing safety equipment or being under the influence, it means your claim could be rejected.
Does international travel insurance cover trip delays or missed connections?
Delays and missed connections are frustrating. Your travel insurance could help cover any pushbacks to your trip itinerary, but there tends to be restrictions and exclusions you’ll need to get your head around first. For instance, the delays may need to be of a certain length before your cover is applicable.
The details on conditions and exclusions can differ from one provider to another. Make sure to check your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or speak with your insurer to know the ins and outs of your policy.
Does international travel insurance cover COVID-19?
COVID-19 doesn’t care about your travel plans, but your travel insurance does. You may be able to find a policy that includes cover for needing to interrupt your trip or cancel it altogether because you’ve become unwell thanks to COVID-19.
