What makes HCF different?
HCF is a proud Australian-owned not-for-profit insurance provider within the Members Health Fund Alliance (Australia’s largest voice for not-for-profit member-owned health insurers). While this might be a big tick for their 1.94 million customers, it’s not the only reason people choose HCF for their health needs.
Customer satisfaction secured
Adding to the trophy cabinet, in 2024 HCF was recognised as Service Champion in the ‘Customer Service Organisation of the Year (Large)’ at the Australian Service Excellence Awards.
More back in members’ pockets
HCF supports its members, not shareholders, which means profits are put towards lower premiums. Over the last 10 years, HCF has paid 89 cents per premium dollar towards benefits for members.
Closing the gap
Forget about large out-of-pocket costs. In 2024 HCF provided 97% of medical services with no gap or a known gap across the 45,960 medical specialists in their network.
Health programs and support
Get additional health support with programs like weight management, childbirth education, swimming lessons, health platforms like The HCF Healthful app, and personalised coaching for certain conditions.
What types of policies does HCF offer?
When it comes to health insurance, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. HCF understands that everyone’s health needs are different and provides a range of options to match.
Hospital cover: Whether it’s planned surgery, or having the choice in where and who you get treated by, hospital cover will have your back when life throws a curveball.
Extras cover: Got regular chiro or psych sessions? Extras cover helps you keep on top of the cost of specialist appointments that Medicare won’t cover. Just keep an eye on your annual limits.
Combined cover: Want it all? Why not combine your hospital and extras policy to keep all your bases covered for both big and small health needs?
Ambulance cover: Most HCF combined policies come with ambulance cover to cover you from unplanned ambulance trip bills. Remember, some states provide free ambulance services for residents so check what your state offers first.
Does HCF have member offers and benefits?
On top of the health programs and wellness support HCF offers, members can also find discounts and benefits for even more value. You can save on e-gift cards for everyday essentials like groceries, and fuel, or get up to 5% off selected purchases from Sydney Adventist Hospital Pharmacy and Ramsay pharmacies across Australia.
Looking for more value and convenience? HCF also has their GP2U app for eligible members, to easily manage your health and connect with your GP.
Which private hospitals does HCF health insurance have an agreement with?
After a big surgery, the last thing you want to see is a bigger then expected bill. While choice is important, if you choose a hospital or specialist within HCF’s agreement network, it could mean a lower out of pocket cost, or even better, none!
The hospitals and specialists that are part of HCF’s network have agreed to lower the MBS gap. This means you’ll either pay nothing, or less, than if you choose a hospital or specialist outside the HCF network. Which is a good win for your wallet.
Remember to always check the HCF partner page for the most updated list of providers within their network.
Partner tip

In 2024 saw an average increase of 3.03% but HCF only locked in an average rise of 2.89.1Health.gov – Private Health Insurance – List of historical premium price changes by insurer from 1997-2024 If your policy starts before April 1, then you could lock in the current rates for another year by paying up to 12 months ahead. So, looking ahead and marking your own calendar could help keep your premiums within budget.
Frequently asked questions
How much does HCF insurance cost?
Figuring out exactly how much your health insurance might be before signing up can feel like a guessing game. This is because how much your policy will cost depends on a range of things like your age, your state, your level of cover, how much you’re willing to pay as an excess, and many other factors.
When it comes to the cost of particular procedure, HCF have a cost indicator tool to help you budget. This handy tool has general cost info on hospital fees, possible out-of-pocket costs and how your preferred doctor or hospital can impact the final bill.
Does HCF have ambulance cover?
If you have a hospital and extras policy with HCF then you’ll be covered for emergency ambulance use by state government ambulance service providers. Some levels of cover will also include non-emergency ambulance trips if your doctor says you need monitoring during transport.
What waiting periods apply to HCF policies?
No matter who you’re insured with, there’ll always be waiting periods before you can start claiming on your hospital cover. Here’s how waiting periods work with HCF.
- Services like palliative care, hospital psychiatric, rehabilitation services etc have a two-month waiting period, even with a pre-existing condition.
- Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy and birth services have a 12-month waiting period.
- All other hospital services will have a two-month waiting period.
- Emergency ambulance trips (for those without pre-existing conditions) have a waiting period of 1 day.
Remember, if you’re switching insurers for your hospital cover and have already served waiting periods, they’ll still be honoured with HCF. But if you’ve upgraded your policy, you’ll need to serve waiting periods for any new services before you can claim.
How do I make a claim with HCF?
Just received treatment for something covered by your extras policy? Now it’s time to claim, which can be easily done with HCF in five different ways.
- On the spot: Tap your HCF membership card at your provider’s HICAPS system, and the claim will be settled right then and there.
- Mobile app: Snap a pic of your receipt and send it to HCF through their app for processing.
- Online: Log in online, head to ‘claims’ and upload your receipt and the rest of the details.
- In person: Go to your local HCF branch with your membership cards and receipts.
- By mail: Fill out a claim form, attach your receipt, and post it to HCF, GPO BOX 4242, SYDNEY NSW 2001.
For hospital claims it’s a little different. At the hospital, you’ll fill out a claim form, which they’ll forward to HCF. If there are any out-of-pocket expenses, you’ll need to pay them and claim separately for bills from doctors or anaesthetists. If your doctor hasn’t already done it for you, you’ll need to send through a Medicare Benefit Statement, which HCF will use to finish your claim.
How do I make payments?
Paying your HCF premiums is easy with iSelect. Set up a direct debit and choose what works for you with fortnightly, monthly, or yearly instalments.
How do excesses work with HCF health insurance?
While excess isn’t the most popular word when it comes to health insurance, it can actually work in your favour by helping to keep your premiums down.
To help share the load (and keep health insurance affordable for everyone), an excess is your contribution to your treatment if you are admitted to hospital.
Opting for a higher excess can help keep your premiums lower but you’ll need to weigh up the likelihood of making a claim.
If you’re not likely to be in and out of the hospital often, then a higher excess probably makes sense. But if you have some planned treatments, going the opposite way and lowering your excess could mean more potential savings on your hospital bills across the year. It’s all about finding what works best for you.
