What makes Bupa health insurance different?

Bupa has been in the business of helping Australians prepare for life’s ups and downs for more than 75 years, establishing a strong reputation.

But what can you expect from Bupa?

A fund that more Australians trust

Bupa has the second-largest slice of the health insurance cake, taking care of a little more than a quarter of the market. And it seems like they’ll have their cake and eat it, too, with an impressive 87% member-retention rate (that’s the proportion of hospital policyholders who have stuck with Bupa for at least two years).1Commonwealth Ombudsman – State of the Health Funds Report 2023-24, p14

Fewer gap payments

Balance looking after your health with your budget, thanks to Bupa’s reputation for more medical services without gaps. When it comes to in-hospital medical services, Bupa hits above the industry averages for no gaps and known gaps.2As above, p20

The ability to manage your health your way

You’re the expert when it comes to your health needs. Bupa makes it easy to look after yourself with a wide selection of extras, discounts and offers from optical partners, the myBupa app, and even at-home care programs.3Available on eligible products. Waiting periods, fund, policy, and program rules apply.

Access to Members First benefits

Bupa’s extensive Members First network of dental, physio, and other extras partners gives you more choice. Plus plenty of perks, like 100% back on a dental check-up and clean every six months, outside your yearly limits, at Members First Ultimate Providers.4At Members First Ultimate providers you can receive 100% back on dental check-up and cleans (select dental items only) once every 6 months, claimable outside of your yearly limits. Waiting periods, benefit claiming restrictions, policy and fund rules apply. Excludes orthodontics and in-hospital treatments. Available on all eligible extras products which includes General Dental (excluding FLEXtras and Your Choice Extras 60 where general dental is not included). If you choose or require any additional dental services, any health insurance benefits will also be subject to your yearly limits. Members First Ultimate providers are not available in all areas.

What policies does Bupa health insurance offer?

With Bupa, you have the option to pick from hospital cover, extras cover, and even combined cover. The trick is choosing policies that work for your health needs and your budget. But it can all be worthwhile when you need to go to hospital or visit the dentist.

Bupa also offers ambulance cover, either as a standalone policy or bundled with most extras or hospital cover. There’s no limit on emergency ambulance rides with recognised providers, in case you’re really having a bad run of luck.

Which private hospitals does Bupa health insurance have an agreement with?

If you’re hoping to make the most of your hospital cover, it’s important to know about hospital agreements. This is when a private hospital and an insurer (Bupa in this case) decide that you’ll either have no out-of-pocket expenses for your hospital services or you’ll at least get the heads up on what you’ll need to pay.

Luckily, Bupa has lots of agreements with private hospitals around the country.

Even if you don’t need to go to hospital, your hospital cover could still come in handy. For instance, if you earn over a certain threshold and don’t hold appropriate hospital cover, you’ll likely get stung by the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) come tax time. This tax can be up to 1.5% of your hard-earned income. But a hospital policy can help you avoid this tax, plus have peace of mind in case you need hospital treatment.
