Who is Australian Unity?
Australian Unity was established in 1840 by eight people in a Melbourne pub, becoming Australia’s first wellbeing company. It’s one for the history books, happening the same year that Britain stopped sending convicts to New South Wales.
Even though it was founded such a long time ago, Australian Unity offered its members health, wealth, and care services right from the start, much like it does today.
These days, Australian Unity has its eye on the wellbeing of all Australians. Its Wellbeing Index, created in partnership with Deakin University, has tracked Australians’ wellbeing for more than 20 years.
What makes Australian Unity different?
Member-owned for mutual rewards
Being a member-owned company – also called a mutual fund – gives Australian Unity the flexibility to invest money into what matters most to its members.
Enjoy everyday savings
Australian Unity offers a Wellplan Rewards program, which allows members to save on everyday purchases like clothing, groceries, and movie tickets. In 2024, members saved almost $360,000 with the program – and nearly a third of that was just on groceries!1Australian Unity – Wellplan Rewards
Smile with No Gap Dental
If you’re an Australian Unity member with eligible cover, you can make the most of preventative dental treatment with no out-of-pocket costs (up to a yearly limit). Keeping your pearly whites healthy is important for your overall wellbeing, and proactive dental visits can save you time, money, and pain down the track.
Say goodbye to gaps
In 2023–24, Australian Unity ranked close to the top for no-gap medical services, with a whopping 91.1% of in-hospital medical services covered with no gap!2Commonwealth Ombudsman – State of the Health Funds, p19 This means that, generally, Australian Unity members were making the most of all kinds of in-hospital medical services without needing to pay from their own pocket.
What health insurance policies does Australian Unity offer?
Australian Unity offers policies for singles, couples, families, single-parent families, and those with extended-dependents. These policies can help cover everyday medical expenses right through to big surgeries – it depends on which policy you choose and whether or not you combine policies for greater coverage.
Ambulance cover
Sometimes a taxi or the train doesn’t cut it. Ambulance cover means you won’t have to foot the whole bill if you need an ambulance ride and aren’t eligible for a freebie.
Hospital cover
You can choose your hospital policy tier based on which procedures you want covered when you’re a private patient in hospital. If you’re after extra value, you might want to keep an eye out for ‘plus’ policies, which go above and beyond for their tier.
Extras cover
Looking after your health doesn’t always mean a stay in hospital. Instead, things like general dental, physio, optical, and even acupuncture and remedial massage can do the trick – and be covered by an extras policy. With Australian Unity, you might even enjoy some of those services without a gap, up to your annual limits.
Combined cover
Make the best of both worlds, with hospital and extras cover all rolled into one.
Which private hospitals does Australian Unity have an agreement with?
Hospital Cover can mean your insurer handles some, if not most, of the costs when you’re admitted as a private patient – as long as your health fund has an agreement with the hospital.
When it comes to comparing health insurance, checking which insurers have agreements with hospitals in your area could be a smart move.
Handily, as of June 2025, Australian Unity has agreements with lots of hospitals across the country.
Helpful tip

Health insurance can be a bit like that swimsuit you’ve forgotten at the back of the wardrobe. It might have fit really well when you bought it, but that may not be the case forever. Taking the time to review your health insurance regularly can help make sure it’s still suitable for you as your family and health evolve.
For instance, taking a look at your claim history could give you an idea of the services you’re using and which health fund offers you could get the most value from.

Frequently asked questions
What is Australian Unity’s overseas visitor cover?
Overseas visitors aren’t eligible for Medicare benefits unless they’re from a country Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with. For those that do, they aren’t eligible for the full array of Medicare benefits.
Often, holding an appropriate level of health insurance is a visa requirement. Australian Unity’s overseas visitors cover includes doctor and specialist fees, emergency ambulance and hospital treatment, accommodation, and theatre fees for international visitors.
Under some visas, you may be required to meet condition 8501. Condition 8501 means that you must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia. All Australian Unity working visitors policies meet condition 8501. None of its current non-working visitor covers meet this requirement.

How do health insurance excesses work with Australian Unity?
You might be familiar with excesses thanks to other kinds of insurance, like for your car or the last time you took an international holiday. Excesses for health insurance apply when you’d like to be treated as a private patient in hospital, no matter who your insurer is.
You’ll need to pay your excess before you’re admitted to hospital. With the excess paid, your treatment can begin, and your insurer will handle other costs that come up (although you may still have some gaps to pay yourself).
Your policy documents will tell you what your excess is.
How do I pay for my health insurance with Australian Unity?
Australian Unity lets you pay for your health cover in lots of ways.
For instance, you can set up a direct debit so you don’t have to worry about missing a bill’s due date. Doing so could even get you a 4% discount on your premiums.
If you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can opt to receive regular bills and to pay them via Australian Unity’s mobile app, its web portal, BPAY, or the phone. Depending on the payment frequency you choose, you could net yourself a premium discount of up to 4%.
How long is the waiting period for health insurance with Australian Unity?
Waiting periods are how long you’ll need to hold your health insurance cover before you can start claiming. They can be a fair bit longer than your usual extended wait at a GP on a busy Saturday morning, but at least you’ll have more than an old Woman’s Weekly to keep yourself entertained.
For hospital cover, the government has strict rules on the maximum waiting periods insurers can set. Typically, you can’t be left in the lurch for more than two months, unless it’s for a pre-existing condition, or pregnancy or childbirth. In those instances, your wait could be as long as a year.
Insurers have more freedom when it comes to extras waiting periods – these aren’t standardised. You’ll usually see waiting periods vary by the kinds of services covered, as well as by insurer. In Australian Unity’s case, its extras waiting periods tend to range from no wait at all to 12 months. Sometimes, it might even waive the waiting period for certain extras as a special deal.
And what about if you’ve already served your waiting periods with another insurer and you’re looking to move to Australian Unity? If you’re opting for a similar or lower of level of cover and it hasn’t been more than 30 days since you left your previous health insurer, you won’t need to reserve them with Australian Unity. However, if you’re after more cover with Australian Unity than with your previous policy, you may have some waiting periods for any of these new higher benefits.
You can check which waiting periods apply to a policy by reading the policy documents.

Alternatively, you can use the Australian Unity smartphone app.
Whichever method you choose, you can get a full picture of your health insurance and manage your cover, like:
